3 Exercises to Help Relieve Scoliosis | Chiropractor for Scoliosis in Lubbock, TX
Hello, this is Dr. Greg Marin from 1-Spine Chiropractic. Today, we’re focusing on scoliosis and how we address it in our office, along with advice on managing it at home to alleviate muscle spasms, tension, and discomfort.
Initial Steps for Treatment
The first step is to come in for an evaluation. Following your assessment, we’ll recommend specific exercises and stretches that you can perform at home to temporarily relieve discomfort.
Home Exercise Demonstrations
1. Pelvic Tilts:
Ideal for strengthening the lower back and improving posture, pelvic tilts involve lying on the floor (or a bench for demonstration purposes) and engaging the abdominal muscles to tilt the pelvis upward. Hold this position for about five seconds, then relax. We recommend doing two sets of ten repetitions.
2. Cat-Cow Stretch:
This exercise increases spine flexibility and eases tension in the torso and neck. Start on your hands and knees, aligning your shoulders over your wrists and your hips over your knees. For the ‘cow’ position, arch your back downward while lifting your head and tailbone. Then, for the ‘cat’ position, round your back upward while tucking your head toward your chest. Alternate between these positions for about five seconds each, aiming for two sets of ten repetitions.
3. Bird-Dog Exercise:
Great for enhancing core stability and preventing scoliosis progression, the bird-dog exercise involves extending one arm forward while stretching the opposite leg back, maintaining balance and alignment. Hold each extension for five seconds, then switch sides. Perform this exercise for about ten repetitions to strengthen the core and lower back effectively.
